At the foot of the hill near the Burcht van Leiden, a unique new hospitality venue has opened: Hotel Rumour. We furnished this monumental carriage house with custom-made furniture and bars, designed by Studio Modijefsky. The result is a vibrant, eye-catching restaurant that’s far from your typical hotel, despite what the name might suggest.

The high ceilings, arches, and wooden beams of the original building have been preserved and are key features in the new interior. Our custom-made furniture and lighting solutions blend seamlessly with the atmosphere created.

Three bespoke sofas are the standout features on the ground floor. Each crafted with timeless oak, elegant details, and stylish blue leather upholstery:

  • The high corner sofa near the entrance is suspended from the wall with a sleek steel frame. An integrated LED strip is subtly hidden within the frame.

  • The U-shaped sofa opposite the bar stands on distinctive round ALPI legs. Above it, Kvadrat panels and powder-coated steel frames with decorative glass have been added. A large mirror, made up of smaller pieces with an oak frame, completes it.

  • The long, custom U-shaped sofa occupies the most prominent spot under the carriage house’s tall, ornate windows. Made of oak and blue leather, it’s filled with beautiful details. Above the sofa is a large piece of decorative glass with LED lighting to accentuate the wall, paired with various mirrors and Kvadrat panels.

In addition to the sofas, we created two striking bars:

  • The downstairs bar features a solid cast terrazzo countertop with integrated LED strips. The countertop tapers inward, creating a dynamic effect. Beneath it, solid oak trim showcases alternating vertical and horizontal grain patterns for a playful touch. Most of the bar is made of ALPI veneer, with a travertine plinth at the base and solid walnut corner edges, all resting on dark terrazzo blocks.
The illuminated column behind the bar is made from powder-coated panels with integrated LED lighting and an antique brass trim. Steel shelves for glasses are mounted within the column, while the wall behind the bar is lined with steel shelves, framed by a mirrored cove for added depth.
In the conservatory behind the main bar, we crafted a small hanging table made of oak. Inlaid with travertine, and powder-coated steel.

  • The upstairs bar mirrors the design of the downstairs bar, featuring dark terrazzo blocks with walnut trim. Notable elements include brass corner columns standing on terrazzo blocks, and a large steel framework supporting mirrors and shelves. The main bar top is cast terrazzo, while the side countertops are made of solid oak.

Alongside the sofas and bars, we also created solid oak daybeds with open mortise and tenon joints. These seating areas rest on ALPI veneer legs to maintain harmony with the sofas.

Additionally, we built an oak bread station, hung various antique mirrors, and crafted sideboards and ALPI veneer service stations with travertine tops.
